How Military Trials Under the UCMJ Began at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base

Selfridge Air National Guard Base (ANGB) is named for the first pilot who died in a crash while on an Orville Wright plane – Thomas Selfridge. He passed away in November 1908. Selfridge and UCMJ jurisdiction started when the U.S. Army leased 640 acres of land for an aviation field in 1917. Selfridge ANGB hosts a large Air National Guard wing along with various reservist tenant units. Only a small contingent of active duty Airmen are likely to be at Selfridge today. However, they are still at risk of court-martial by the mere fact of being on active duty. In addition, any Air National Guard who are mobilized into Title 10 Active status are subject to court martial under the UCMJ.

How Military Trials Under the UCMJ Began at the Detroit Arsenal

Detroit Arsenal was the first facility constructed in the United States with the express purpose of mass producing tanks and armored vehicles for the armed services. Located in the Detroit suburb of Warren, planning of the facility began in 1940 under the direction of the architect Albert Kahn. Construction of the 113 acre facility officially began in 1941 under the control of the Chrysler Company, however the United States government was the controlling entity and land owner. Chrysler was able to construct the entire facility in just over one year. Throughout the course of World War II the Detroit Arsenal was able to easily meet its mission, producing a quarter of the almost 90,000 American tanks produced during the War. Later, the M1 Abrams tank was produced at the Detroit Arsenal by General Dynamics along with the main General Dynamics plant in Lima, Ohio.

The Detroit Arsenal was permanently closed in 2001. Service members and retirees who were stationed at the Detroit Arsenal in the past are still at risk of being court-martialed for alleged crimes during their time there. (For example, service members are currently being court-martialed for alleged crimes in the 1980’s at bases that no longer exist.)
