How Military Trials Under the UCMJ Began at Camp Beauregard

Camp Beauregard started in World War I as a training and mobilization camp. Located in Pineville, Camp Beauregard now provides training for the Louisiana National Guard but in World War I it was the site of the mobilization of the U.S. Army’s 17th division and of trials by court martial. In 1940 as war preparation began for World War II, Camp Beauregard was returned to the federal government and grew busy once more. After World War II, the camp went back to the state, where it was used as a training area and then deactivated once more. It would remain deactivated until 1973 when it would become the largest military training area in Louisiana as the Vietnam War began.

The Camp Beauregard Courtroom

Today, Camp Beauregard is mostly home to training and facilities for the Louisiana National Guard as well as support services for the Department of Defense. However, when a National Guardsman is mobilized into Title X status, he or she is subject to court martial under the UCMJ. Such a court martial would most likely take place at Fort Polk.

How Military Trials Under the UCMJ Began at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans

The Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans (NAS JRB) is located on the Mississippi River and bordered by the residential area of Belle Chasse. Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans is actually a combination of two former Naval Reserve air bases from World War II. Eventually Marine Corps and Air Force Reserve units were moved here as well. The primary mission of Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans is the training of Navy and Marine Corps Reserve pilots.

Although most New Orleans personnel are not mobilized, the small contingent of uniformed American active military, as well as any mobilized reservists, are still at risk of court-martial by the mere fact of being on active duty. In addition, service members and retirees who were stationed in New Orleans in the past are still at risk of being court-martialed for alleged crimes during their time there. (For example, service members are currently being court-martialed for alleged crimes in the 1980’s at bases that no longer exist.)
